This year’s Road Safety Research,
Policing and Education Conference proved to be a very
successful event, bringing together over 500
like-minded, enthusiastic and dedicated road safety
practitioners to share their expertise and insights,
with the common goal of improving road safety. Delegates
from across Australia were joined by international
counterparts from Indonesia, India, New Zealand, China,
Sri Lanka, United Arab Emirates and Canada.
In conjunction with the national
conference, the NSW Centre for Road Safety also hosted
the first international conference on Intelligent Speed
Adaptation. The conference represented a truly
international perspective on Intelligent Speed
Adaptation, with leading road safety practitioners and
industry professionals from Australia and around the
world discussing the latest results from ISA Trials and
the issues revolving around the implementation of ISA
and its associated systems.
Despite the record reduction in
fatal road crashes both in NSW and other states and
territories in 2008 (and over many previous years), many
challenges still lie ahead in achieving a common goal of
reducing road deaths and injuries. Improvements can
still be made by investigating emerging road safety
technology, designing and maintaining safer roads and
implementing best practice policy to address road user
behaviour.
The NSW Centre for Road Safety,
along with other road safety partners in NSW, were
pleased to have hosted a memorable event that deepened
the industry’s knowledge and understanding as well as
nurtured professional contacts and opportunities in the
road safety field.
